Mini Lovey Blanket Tutorial

 

 

Materials needed

• 1 piece of quilt batting 17.5” x 17.5”
• 2 pieces of fabric 17.5” x 17.5”
• thread
• 1” x 3/4” Velcro Or snaps
• cutting mat and rotary tool or scissors and tape measure
• pins
• Sewing machine

* Please read through all directions before getting started.

Let’s get started

Start by cutting out your fabrics. You should have two fabrics and the batting piece for the blanket. For the pacifier/ toy strap you will need a piece of 3” x 7” fabric.

Fold the strap fabric in half long ways, right sides facing. Sew around the openings ¼” from edge, leaving one of the ends open. Turn right side out and top stitch.

Attach your snaps or sew on your Velcro. The bottom snap or Velcro should start 2 ¾” from
the top of the fabric.
Pin the open end of the strap to the right side of one of the blanket fabrics as shown, about 5” from the edge. Stitch the strap down, back stitch for added durability.

Place the other blanket fabric on top of this one, right sides facing. Then top with the quilt batting. Pin them together and stitch 3/8” from the edge. Sew all the way around but make sure to leave about a 5” opening.

Snip off the corners and turn right side out.
Fold under the fabric from the opening and topstitch all the way around the blanket.
You are finished!

* If you’d like, you can make the strap a bit longer but I wouldn’t go longer than 9”. You can also make this without the strap.

Pacifier/Toy Clip Tutorial

Materials Needed

• 9” x 2 ½” fabric
• 1” suspender clip
• 2 ¾” thin elastic
• Long knitting needle or something comparable

 

Let's Start!

 

Fold your fabric in half lengthwise and pin. Make a loop with your elastic and insert it in the end of the fabric and pin. Make sure you leave a little bit of the tails of elastic out of the end.

 

 

Topstitch from the top to the middle and the bottom to the middle backstitching at the beginning and the end. Leave a 2” opening in the middle. For added durability sew over the elastic a few times.

 

Turn the fabric right side out using your knitting needle to push out the corners gently. Topstitch all the way around.

 

 

Insert the suspender clip in the end without the elastic. Fold over about ¾” and sew over your existing stitches a few times for durability.

 

You are finished!

Diaper Changing Pad

Supplies List

• 20" x 25" of decorative fabric
• 20" x 25" of terry cloth fabric
• 5" x 10" of decorative fabric
• 1 package of bias tape
• 3/4" x 1 1/ 4" velcro

 

 

Let's get started!

1. First take your 5" x 10" piece of fabric and fold in half, wrong sides facing and pin bias tape around sides and top.
2. Sew one of the velcro pieces on the end of the strip. Place your two large fabrics together, wrong sides facing.
3. Pin your small stip of fabric on the larger fabrics 4" from the edge on one of the narrow ends of the large fabric
4. Pin bias tape all the way around the larger fabrics starting where you placed the small strip of fabric. Sew all of the way around.
5. Backstitch over the small strip for added durability.
6. Sew the other velcro piece on the inside end of the strip near the the stitching. Roll up and close with velcro.
7. Fold your fabric in half lenghtwise.
8. You are finished!

4-Ply Burp Cloths

What you need is very simple: One package of prefolded cloth diapers, fabric and coordinating ribbon, and thread. The only sewing supplies you need are a sewing machine, a hem gauge, straight pins, scissors and pinking shears.


 
Walmart sells two types of cloth diapers. Trust me, you want to buy prefolded diapers. Here's what the label looks like.


This is what the diaper looks like. I tossed the diapers,fabrics and ribbon into my washer and washed them on the hottest setting before I started working on them. (If you have a lingerie bag, put the ribbon in that to help avoid it getting tangled.) You want to preshrink everything. After everything was dry, I ironed it all very smooth to
make it easier to work with.



Here's a tip. Lightweight cotton fabric will ravel like crazy in the washer and dryer. Use pinking shears to trim the ends of the fabric to prevent this. It may still ravel a little, but not nearly as much.



After they are washed and dried, the diapers measure about 17 inches long. You're going to sew a seven inch wide strip of fabric down the center of the diaper. To allow for a one-half inch hem around all four sides of the strips, cut the fabric eight inches wide and eighteen inches long.

For each burp cloth, cut two lengths of ribbon the same length as the fabric strip.



Lay the fabric strip down the exact center of the diaper with the pressed hems facing down. Lay the ribbon down the sides, lining it up with the edges of the fabric. Pin the sides in place. Then fold the ends under so they meet the edges of the diaper and pin those in place, too. Everything's all pinned in place now and you're ready to sew your seams.


Sewing through all three layers, sew the side seams first.



Sew down both sides of the ribbon, making your seam as close to the edge of the ribbon as you can. It helps to sew very slowly. After you've sewn the sides sew across the ends, again, as close to the edge as you can.

That's it - you've just made a cute, cute burp cloth!


This is what the finished burp cloth looks like. Because you washed everything in hot water before you started, this is pretty much what it will continue to look like as it's used and washed over and over again.


 
They're very sweet. And they're fun to make!
